Day 3 Community Celebration: Culturally Diverse Parental Narratives on 2e and Profoundly Gifted Children and Teens

April 4, 2022 By ghfmain

Lin Lim moderates with Juniette Kang’a, Rashmii Mahendra, and Tiffany Chaiko

Lin Lim leads a panel of parents of ethnically diverse twice exceptional students to learn how to integrate their cultural background into everyday living moments.

Juniette puts the crux of this presentation perfectly – “DIFFERENT. Such a simple word, yet there are so many dynamic experiences of families living in this rare world of ‘different.’ Multiple exceptionalities, ranging across cognitive, ethnic, and racial diversity and cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, complicate the lives of high-ability children. Such children who are gifted, have a learning challenge, and are ethnically diverse are referred to as thrice-exceptional, or 3e.” The panel invites parents of ethnically diverse twice exceptional students to learn how to integrate their cultural background into everyday living moments.

Panelist Juniette Kang’a is the mother of 2e children. She completed her bachelors in Kenya, her birth home, and later obtained her masters in Australia before relocating to the USA. She spent 17 years advocating for patients with complex diseases in the pharmaceutical industry and has now moved her advocacy passions to supporting twice exceptional children.  Whilst not developing homeschool learning guides, negotiating IEPs, and mentoring adult adopted children through living, she is reading and pursuing her doctorate at Bridges Graduate School of Cognitive Diversity.

Panelist Rashmii Mahendra, MBA is a doctoral student of Cognitive Diversity/Neurodiversity and has been a Senior Manager in Learning & Development and Human Resources at a multinational corporation. She is mother to an 11-year-old twice-exceptional son, and her ongoing journey in innovative, supportive learning environments is inspired by him.

Panelist Tiffany Chaiko is a doctoral student at Bridges Graduate School, a private learning coach, and a parent of two twice-exceptional children.  She has more than 30 years of professional experience and a Master’s degree with distinction in Education in Educational leadership from Hawaii Pacific University.  Interests include twice-exceptionality, design thinking.

Moderator Lin Lim, Ph.D. is an Associate Dean at Bridges Graduate School of Cognitive Diversity in Education (BGS). She holds a doctorate in psychology from Boston University, Academic Graduate Certificate in Mind, Brain, and Teaching (Johns Hopkins University), and Twice-exceptional Education (BGS). Her journey with her two profoundly gifted children, one is twice-exceptional, drives her to create better understanding and collaboration between all educational stakeholders.
