GHF Choices: DIY Education

Results-Based Community Learning

Home education can be really hard; it can be overwhelming and lonely. It requires a new set of skills, and it is a test of confidence. That is why GHF has created a yearlong program that was developed by experts, professionals, and veteran families. It was designed for you to go through it at your own, easy-to-manage pace with the support of the GHF community.

Introducing GHF Choices: DIY Education

A GHF Membership Course

Every year, families come to GHF to learn how to support their gifted learners, whether it is homeschool, public school, or anything in between. We’ve created an annual, collaborative course to help these families—our community—in that journey. Our goal is for you to complete each year with the confidence and knowledge to meet the educational needs of your gifted learners.

Barry Gelston, GHF Board President

Meet the creators of this program, Carol Malueg and Kasi Peters. Interviewed by Sarah Mendonca.

Our program is broken into four seasons.

  • Fall—Explorations in Creative and Curated Gifted Education
  • Winter—Supporting Social and Emotional Needs
  • Spring—2e and Managing Multiple Exceptionalities
  • Summer—Curriculum and Other Resources

Each season is broken into three themes, one for each month.

Here are the themes for Fall.

  • September—Making Choices: Explore Your Options for Your Learner’s Education
  • October—Academics: Transitioning Away from Traditional Educational Options
  • December—Socialization and Social Development

Each week, you’ll have something to read, listen to, or watch.

You can join us for a facilitated discussion on the week’s topic and have optional, weekly homework to choose from.

  • Write a blog post, article, haiku, or anything else about what you think, feel, and know.
  • Talk about the week’s topic in the designated discussion groups in the forum.
  • Ask your questions in the discussion groups
  • Share what you know and find questions to answer in the discussion groups.

This program will have monthly lectures and a toolbox of resources, articles, podcasts, or videos. For your coursework, you will have the option to write, talk, ask, or share. The magic will be in the community collaboration with well-curated information.

What will you get from GHF Choices: DIY Education?

As a participant, you’ll reap some great benefits:

  • Learn from other DIY educators. We’ve designed GHF Choices: DIY Education to help take the mystery out of schooling outside the box.
  • Meet new people. Your fellow participants are as motivated as you are to explore and discuss options for a rich and vibrant educational experience for their children.
  • Get and share ideas and resources.  Parents and caregivers who carve nontraditional educational pathways for their children have a wealth of information to share!

You’re a part of something bigger.

By joining GHF Choices: DIY Education, you’re also a member of The GHF Forum, our wellspring community. You’ll be able to keep up with our GHF Choices: DIY Education activity here and in your main GHF Forum activity feed. (Think of it as our own Facebook newsfeed with course and other activity all in one place).

Because this program is part of GHF Membership, you get access to all three of the monthly GHF Expert Series, enjoy membership discounts, and support your all-volunteer community.

Please join GHF to enjoy these membership benefits.

GHF Membership is our primary source of income for this non-profit. GHF has no full-time staff and we are just looking to cover our costs. Your $49.99 membership is your way to support GHF so that we can continue to serve our community. The membership discounts are there to help you recoup the cost of your membership fee. Please visit these vendors and save.

As GHF Members, you will be involved in a collaborative learning community focused on educating gifted learners at home.
Members of GHF enjoy these benefits for $49.99 per year.

  • #4 Ten ways: Use the forced choice paradigm February 23, 2021
Use the forced choice paradigm – When kids are upset, they can do lots of things: melt down, lash out, shut down, etc.  All these states represent altered neuropsychological functioning, usually marked by an excess of emotion that the body is unable to process.  If the body is overloaded on emotion, the “lizard brain” (the […]

  • #3 Ten ways: Don’t ask questions if they aren’t questions February 16, 2021
Don’t ask questions if they aren’t questions – I have a good friend who is a lawyer (who shall remain nameless for the purposes of this article) who often admonishes me for asking questions when I don’t have to.  It is a common social artifice, but it rarely serves any purpose other than maintaining niceties. […]

  • #2 Ten ways: “Let’s” not “You” February 9, 2021
“Let’s” not “You” – We’re in this together!  When I work with a client in therapy, I usually ask some variation of “What do we want to work on today?”  I know that I’m not the client (really, I do).  But this inclusive technique is a subtle way of modeling connection and setting boundaries.  Gifted […]

  • Leading with Love and Kindness February 5, 2021
I often speak about the approach of Leading with Love and Kindness within the contexts of being the President of a non-profit and as a teacher. I know that it can sound a little much. People may ask, is this guy in some weird cult?  So, I want to explain what I mean. Let’s start with explaining that […]

  • #1 Ten ways: “And” not “But” January 30, 2021
“And” not “But” – As human beings, we tend to connect things and create narratives. Sometimes this is really helpful for us (“I know that I’m not very good at chess right now, but I just started playing!” or “I didn’t like the last season of Doctor Who, but I loved the previous two seasons!”) […]

  • Ten ways you can use psychologically minded language with your gifted/2e student (at home or at homeschool) January 18, 2021
Working with your child as a both a teacher and a parent can be challenging. Teachers go to years of school to learn how to reach and mold talented young minds. Mental health professionals have years of practice in trying to unpack the tangle of human motivation. You have a career and a life (and […]
