Sam Young, M.Ed. presents RS2e: Reimagining Socializing for Twice-Exceptional Students

Socializing has changed and continues to do so in the wake of the pandemic. While there are many confounding struggles that our students are facing daily, we must also recognize that socializing itself is transforming.

The presentation takes participants on a journey through 10 research-based strategies to accomplish the 2 aforementioned goals.

Additionally, those who stay until the end will receive FREE BONUS resources to further student and parent growth at home!

2023 GHF Conference Day 2 Event 3: Melanie Hayes and MaryGrace Stewart

May 11, 2023 By Katherine Turner

Dr. Melanie Hayes presents How You Can Use the Microschool Model to Support Neurodivergent Learners in Any Setting / Dr. MaryGrace Stewart presents Synthesizing Over 100 Years of Theory in Gifted Education Into a Functioning Practical Online Program

Dr. Melanie Hayes

How You Can Use the Microschool Model to Support Neurodivergent Learners in Any Setting

Neurodivergent learners often struggle to succeed in traditional learning models. Their needs and abilities are rarely understood or accommodated appropriately. This can lead to disconnection and loss of motivation to learn. It also has a negative impact on children’s self-efficacy and sense of their own capabilities. This Session is designed to empower parents to see their children’s learning path through multiple lenses. We will explore ways to incorporate some of the Big Minds’ strategies into various learning models. We will also cover the most important aspects of helping your children learn to trust their inherent wisdom and feel empowered to create an environment that works best for them.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:  Identifying Your Children’s Needs/Abilities – Figuring Out What Is Not Working and Why – Putting Well-Being First – Incorporating Diverse Learning Strategies – Helping Your Children to Work to Their Strengths – Embracing Multiple Pathways to Success

BIO: Dr. Melanie Hayes focuses on helping neurodivergent, gifted, and twice exceptional persons find their niche and work to their strengths. She holds a master’s in gifted education, a master’s in marriage and family therapy, and a doctorate in educational leadership with a focus on twice exceptionality. Her research and outreach over the past decade has been centered on building support and understanding for the 2e population. Dr. Hayes is also the founder of Big Minds, an educational model for 2e children that mentors and supports their intellectual, social, and emotional well-being. She is currently focused on her private therapy practice for neurodivergent individuals.

Dr. MaryGrace Stewart

Synthesizing over 100 years of theory in gifted education, into a functioning practical online program.

This session will demonstrate how to make an excellent education for gifted and twice-exceptional learners from Pre-K to age 14 and beyond using a few key principles and concepts. It will define and describe what is essential for those students, provide an open and flexible framework participants can use, and it will point to the research and theories that support it all. Participants will go away with “the secret sauce” that the presenter has created to make it all work.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Participants will come away knowing the essential things what gifted and 2e students need, how to create a system which does those things and works for their situation, and the research and theories that support them in their efforts to best educate their children and students.

BIO: Dr. Stewart is the founder, Chief Academic Officer, and a teacher at IDEAL4Gifted., an online program for gifted and 2e students ages 5 to 14. She has over 40 years experience working in gifted ed and talent development. She has worked in public and private schools and has done presentations on gifted education topics across the U.S., in China, and Kenya. She was tired of waiting for the educational system to change and knew our students couldn’t wait, so when people realized online learning was a real possibility she began what became IDEAL4Gifted. Her education includes an Ed.D. in Educational Change, a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Gifted Ed. an MA in The Tactilo-kinesthetic Aspects of Art Production, a B.S. in Art Education, a Broker in Commercial Real Estate, and a Certificate in Mime for the Actor. 2023 GHF Conference Day 2 Event 2: Carol Malueg

May 11, 2023 By Katherine Turner

Carol Malueg presents The Road to Positive Advocacy for Your Gifted Child

We are our child’s first and most fervent advocates, and we hope like mad that our child will learn how to be their own champion before they head off to college and/or career! Advocacy, like any skill, takes hard work, practice, and learning from our mistakes. Join Carol for a skill-sharpening session on becoming, and helping your child become, an effective and positive advocate.

The journey from preschool to college can present a tricky route to navigate when you are the parent of a gifted or twice-exceptional child. It can feel like a lonely, overwhelming job, but you don’t have to go it alone. A collaborative network including your student, parenting/caregiving peers and partners, educators, and other practicing professionals makes the journey far less treacherous and much more rewarding. Starting with the earliest school years, we’ll talk about collecting resources, expanding your network, and practicing and modeling positive advocacy skills. Over time, the load gets lighter as your child learns and grows and eventually becomes their own best advocate.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Participants will gain insight into the constraints of the school system, explore positive and productive ways to work within the system, and nurture their child’s self-advocacy skills.

BIO:  Carol Malueg, M.A. GCT, 2e, is the mother of 2 gifted young adults, works in the field of gifted education and support, and volunteers with several state and national organizations that support gifted kids and their families. Carol sits on the Board of Directors for the Gifted Homeschoolers Forum (GHF) and the Minnesota Council for the Gifted and Talented (MCGT). She received the MCGT Friend of the Gifted award in 2020. Carol has trained hundreds of Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted (SENG) Model Parent Group Facilitators from around the world and was awarded the SENG Presidential Award for Distinguished Service in 2021. She has worked on three Javits Grant research projects focused on improving identification of and services for gifted at-risk students. Carol currently works as a Learning Coach and Educational Consultant. Her new venture, Gifted Roads LLC, addresses the gifted and multi-exceptional experience across the lifespan.
