Julie Skolnick, MA, JD presents Gifted and Distractible: Parenting and Teaching Twice Exceptional Learners

The objective of this presentation is to empower parents, educators and professionals to bring out the best and raise self-confidence in twice exceptional kids through an understanding of the 2e person’s inner experience, through strategies that are immediately applicable for parents and educators, and through advocacy steps necessary to encourage the adults in 2e kids’ lives to collaborate on the 2e child’s behalf. May 11, 2023 By Katherine Turner

Lin Lim, PhD and Adam Laningham, M.Ed Present “SEL: Home, Home Education, School & Beyond”

The emotional well-being of our children has always been important and often overlooked. It plays a larger crucial role for outlier gifted and twice-exceptional (2e) children. Gifted and 2e children often process and experience the world around them deeply. Outlier children often experience greater psychosocial dissonance. Many families benefit from a better understanding of the variations in gifted and 2e traits which then informs appropriate and effective psychosocial supports. Join the president and president elect of SENG to better understand the significance of our children’s emotional health, the impact of trauma, and broaden your strategies toolbox to support them both at home, in home education, in school, and beyond. We look forward to sharing our knowledge and answering your questions!

2023 GHF Conference Day 3 Event 5: Austina De Bonte

May 11, 2023 By Katherine Turner

Austina De Bonte presents Getting Students Writing: How to Support Twice Exceptional Students and Other Reluctant Writers

One of the most challenging academic areas for twice exceptional students is writing. Learn the five root causes of writing challenges, how to identify what’s going on, and how to support each one. Without a finer grained understanding of exactly where the writing challenges are coming from, attempts to provide support or therapy can miss the mark, sometimes substantially. Once you know what the challenge is, there are productive, targeted ways to help.

This session synthesizes methods used by Bridges Academy as well as private writing tutors, and is full of practical tips and techniques. Specifically, we’ll pull apart the difference between physical causes of handwriting trouble versus brain-based causes, and how to address each one. We will also see how stealth dyslexia, vision processing disorders, executive function challenges and ADHD impact writing, and most importantly, how best to support your child depending on what’s going on.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Participants will be able to: – identify 5 causes of writing challenges – align support strategies to each cause – productively support a student who is having trouble getting started or “doesn’t know what to write”

Austina De Bonte is a consultant at Smart is not Easy, Past President of the Northwest Gifted Child Association, and President of the Washington Coalition for Gifted Education. Austina specializes in helping families get to the root cause(s) of their kids’ twice exceptional challenges. She also works with school district teams to improve equitable identification strategies. Austina has won three Outstanding Advocate awards from the PTA, and was named People to Watch by Variations 2e Magazine. She is a certified SENG Model Parent Group facilitator. She has a Masters degree from MIT, and is a doctoral candidate at Bridges Graduate School.
