S2, E2: Kasi Ann Peters – Raising square pegs in a world full of round holes

February 9, 2021 By ghfmain

Raising square pegs in a world full of round holes

Kasi will be discussing some of the challenges as well as thrills of going off the beaten path. For homeschoolers, we already know that one size does not fit all. Kasi has discovered the rewards of allowing her children to have autonomy over their lives, and her children have flourished when they did not have to fit into neurotypical boxes.

Kasi Ann Peters

Kasi is a board-certified music therapist with 20 years of experience working in pediatric music therapy. She has co-authored the Individualized Music Therapy Assessment Protocol, and is co-author of a number of chapters in different music therapy books. Kasi holds a certificate in Gifted and Talented Education through University of California Irvine and currently serves on the Board of Directors for Gifted Homeschoolers Forum, Gro Gifted, and Profoundly Gifted Retreat. As a SENG-Model Parent Group Master Facilitator, Kasi co-facilitates support groups for families raising gifted children. Her efforts in this area were recognized as she was presented with the 2017 SMPG Facilitator of the Year award. She lives in Culver City with her husband and two amazing children.

S1, E5: Vanessa Fadial – The only constant is change

December 14, 2020 By ghfmain

Vanessa Fadial

Vanessa Fadial

Vanessa is a reluctant homeschooler. She has two children, a 17 year old son and 14 year old daughter. She homeschooled her profoundly gifted son on and off from third grade until 6th grade, trying to find a good educational fit for him. Her son entered high school at 12 and college at 14. Now he is a thriving junior at UCLA. She found her village at the Davidson Institute, which is a 501 (c) foundation that serves the profoundly gifted population. Davidson offers specialized support to this gifted population with very different learning needs. It opened its first public school in 2006 in Reno, Nevada.

Vanessa is a pianist and teaches piano at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles California. Dr. Fadial has a vital interest in performing music by living composers and is a member of the Yarbo/Fadial Duo, with violinist, Anyango Yarbo-Davenport.

Autum Romano

Follow your passion, watch your child fly

Autumn lives in Colorado with her neurodiverse family and has been homeschooling her gifted 16 year old son for 7 years.  Through the years she has learned to trust that learning will happen if you create a culture of discovery and trust your child’s passion.

S1, E3: Darby Kennedy

October 24, 2020 By ghfmain

If you need a village, build one!  In this interview, Darby McClendon Kennedy will talk about the highs and lows of homeschooling her 2 profoundly gifted dyslexic children.  She has homeschooled her children for 10 years and her journey from a public school teacher to a parent forced her to step far outside the mainstream and find the grace to say “I didn’t understand what you needed and I’m sorry.”  She has since then focused on the mental well being and allowed her children to pursue their passions.  When she could not find other parents in similar situations, she started an inclusive secular homeschool co-op, which has then helped many other families.

Darby Kennedy began as a public school teacher and like many parents of gifted kids, found that the public school system was a poor fit for their needs. She has homeschooled her 16 and 13 year old kids for 10 years. Through that time she learned a lot about herself, but more importantly she learned to trust her children to know what they need to thrive. After deciding to homeschool, her family was unable to find a local community that supported 2e children. So, she built her own village. She is one of the founding board members of Space, Time, and Community, Inc., a secular inclusive homeschool support group. She also teaches history, government, geography, and current events to high school students in that group.
