S2, E2: Kasi Ann Peters – Raising square pegs in a world full of round holes

February 9, 2021 By ghfmain

Raising square pegs in a world full of round holes

Kasi will be discussing some of the challenges as well as thrills of going off the beaten path. For homeschoolers, we already know that one size does not fit all. Kasi has discovered the rewards of allowing her children to have autonomy over their lives, and her children have flourished when they did not have to fit into neurotypical boxes.

Kasi Ann Peters

Kasi is a board-certified music therapist with 20 years of experience working in pediatric music therapy. She has co-authored the Individualized Music Therapy Assessment Protocol, and is co-author of a number of chapters in different music therapy books. Kasi holds a certificate in Gifted and Talented Education through University of California Irvine and currently serves on the Board of Directors for Gifted Homeschoolers Forum, Gro Gifted, and Profoundly Gifted Retreat. As a SENG-Model Parent Group Master Facilitator, Kasi co-facilitates support groups for families raising gifted children. Her efforts in this area were recognized as she was presented with the 2017 SMPG Facilitator of the Year award. She lives in Culver City with her husband and two amazing children.

S2, E9: Suki Wessling, Writer and Educator. Teaching to strengths rather than focusing on weaknesses.

January 22, 2021 By ghfmain

Suki Wessling, writer and educator.

When I was raising my own children, I learned about the special education approach of teaching to strengths rather than focusing on weaknesses. Ever since, this has been my approach, and I believe it results in more confident, self-directed learners.

Suki Wessling is a writer of widely published poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. She has worked as a college English teacher, small press publisher, graphic designer, and journalist. Suki writes about gifted children, education, and homeschooling, with an emphasis on serving the emotional and academic needs of unusual learners. Her books, From School to Homeschool (Great Potential Press) and Exploring Homeschooling for your Gifted Learner (National Association for Gifted Children), introduce parents seeking alternative educational approaches for their gifted children to the basics of homeschooling. Her book, Homeschool with Confidence, is a goal-setting guide for teens that she uses in connection with her online goal-setting courses for teens. Suki is also the author of Hanna, Homeschooler, a chapter book. Suki teaches writing, literature, and education classes for children and adults in person and online at Athena’s Advanced Academy. She writes a blog about learning for children at http://kidblog.sukiwessling.com/ and one for adults at http://blog.sukiwessling.com/.

  • #4 Ten ways: Use the forced choice paradigm February 23, 2021
Use the forced choice paradigm – When kids are upset, they can do lots of things: melt down, lash out, shut down, etc.  All these states represent altered neuropsychological functioning, usually marked by an excess of emotion that the body is unable to process.  If the body is overloaded on emotion, the “lizard brain” (the […]

  • #3 Ten ways: Don’t ask questions if they aren’t questions February 16, 2021
Don’t ask questions if they aren’t questions – I have a good friend who is a lawyer (who shall remain nameless for the purposes of this article) who often admonishes me for asking questions when I don’t have to.  It is a common social artifice, but it rarely serves any purpose other than maintaining niceties. […]

  • #2 Ten ways: “Let’s” not “You” February 9, 2021
“Let’s” not “You” – We’re in this together!  When I work with a client in therapy, I usually ask some variation of “What do we want to work on today?”  I know that I’m not the client (really, I do).  But this inclusive technique is a subtle way of modeling connection and setting boundaries.  Gifted […]

  • Leading with Love and Kindness February 5, 2021
I often speak about the approach of Leading with Love and Kindness within the contexts of being the President of a non-profit and as a teacher. I know that it can sound a little much. People may ask, is this guy in some weird cult?  So, I want to explain what I mean. Let’s start with explaining that […]

  • #1 Ten ways: “And” not “But” January 30, 2021
“And” not “But” – As human beings, we tend to connect things and create narratives. Sometimes this is really helpful for us (“I know that I’m not very good at chess right now, but I just started playing!” or “I didn’t like the last season of Doctor Who, but I loved the previous two seasons!”) […]

  • Ten ways you can use psychologically minded language with your gifted/2e student (at home or at homeschool) January 18, 2021
Working with your child as a both a teacher and a parent can be challenging. Teachers go to years of school to learn how to reach and mold talented young minds. Mental health professionals have years of practice in trying to unpack the tangle of human motivation. You have a career and a life (and […]
