Day 2 Session 1: Making Space for 2e Math Learning

April 4, 2022 By ghfmain

Barry Gelston, M.Ed

Mr. Gelston will lead a workshop designed to encourage families to discuss creating a functional, psychologically safe workspace for their children to learn math. Strategies will be shared to empower both parents and their learners to navigate math successfully while feeling comfortable and secure.

Whether it be for exclusively homeschooling or after-school homework, we as parents have an opportunity to modify the learning environment to ensure that our children can have all of their unique needs met. In this workshop, Mr. Gelston will lead a discussion on several areas:

  1. What do we as parents need to do to make a psychologically safe learning environment for ourselves and our children?
  2. How can we make the physical environment comfortable and appropriate for learning? What are my child’s particular sensory and motor needs?
  3. What are assistive technologies and how can we use them for our children’s unique needs? Does my child need support with reading, writing, and or organization?

There will be an additional question asked in the GHF Forum for families to share tools and resources with each other and to continue the conversation for after the conference is over.

Presenter Barry Gelston, M.Ed. is the Board President of GHF, guiding its mission to empower every gifted family to make strategic, proactive, and intentional educational choices.

Currently, Mr. Gelston is a doctoral student at Bridges Graduate School of Cognitive Diversity in Education whose focus is on supporting gifted and 2e families. Barry holds an M.Ed. in math education from Cambridge College.

Day 2 Breakout Session: Ensuring Early Identification and Intervention for Gifted and 2e Children

April 4, 2022 By ghfmain

Adriane Ransom, OTD, MA, OTR/L, SWC

Under-identification, misdiagnosis and misunderstanding gifted/2e children runs rampant across all checkpoints, from the classroom to the doctor’s office to the home. Consequences from under-identification of gifted and 2e students and the resulting lack of interventions include failure to thrive, average or below average reading and mathematics achievement, boredom, rebellion, underachievement, dropping out, inappropriate or disruptive classroom behavior, and/or social withdrawal. Adriane, owner of the highly regarded Bloom Pediatrics in West Los Angeles, invites you to learn the distinguishing characteristics of giftedness/2e and recognize how these characteristics impact behavior, particularly in young children, and will give you tools and strategies for you to teach your children to improve their self-regulation and social participation. You will also learn about obtaining referrals, including for occupational therapy, and building a village tailored to your family’s particular needs.

Adriane is a pediatric occupational therapist and owner of Bloom Pediatrics in West Los Angeles. She has over 20 years of experience in working with children who are gifted or 2e. Adriane received her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from Boston University (2022), Master of Arts in Occupational Therapy from the University of Southern California (2000), and Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh (1997).

Day 2 Community Celebration: Family Case Studies of the Hybrid Schooler

April 4, 2022 By ghfmain

Michelle Barmazel, Pin Pin Wei, and Ric Mejia

When it comes to a “typical” gifted or 2e academic career, finding one modality in kindergarten and staying with just that all the way through high school graduation is anything but. Traditional schools tend to play to “the middle,” gifted programs are few and far between, online options are not usually comprehensive, and even the most fervent of homeschoolers need extracurriculars, mentorships, advanced classes, social opportunities and some variety. Hybrid schooling is selecting what elements we want from outside sources, and that includes public school. We can choose a la carte even when the menu is prix fixe! Michelle, Pin Pin, and Ric are excited to share how they’ve tailored their family’s learning experiences with the resources at their disposal and offer their excellent advice and help.

Michelle Barmazel, Co-President of MAGE, is an advocate for the highly gifted. An education consultant for families with highly and profoundly gifted children, Michelle has an MPA from Harvard with a focus on gifted education policy.  She also has an MBA from Stanford and a BA from UCLA in linguistics/computer science.   While at Harvard, she spoke at the TEDxHGSE conference on “Why Gifted May Not Be What You Think.” She has sat on several boards including Stanford Alumni of New York, Geneva and New England, HKSNE and NFTE and is the former board chair of PG Retreat.

Pin-pin Wei has a Ph.D. in bioinorganic chemistry with a postdoc in developmental neurobiology, but was still unprepared for the amount of work that homeschooling entailed. Luckily, her son Leo persisted in his laser-focus interest in music. She still dreams of science experiments and tea parties.

Day 2 GHF Press Event: An Introduction to Polyvagal Theory: The Science of Connection

April 4, 2022 By ghfmain

Autum Romano

The new frontier in neuroscience study, Polyvagal Theory, is presented in an accessible format as it relates to gifted and 2e children. What is neuroception and co-regulation? Let’s explore how these two key concepts from Polyvagal Theory can unlock the mystery and help to build healthy and rewarding relationships with our gifted children.

Polyvagal Theory gives us a framework and deeper understanding of how our own individual body wisdom tells us if we feel safe or not. I believe that everyone deserves to understand how this wisdom works! My mission is to take a complex theory and share it with families, children, educators and clinicians in a fun and digestible format. The foreword for my children’s book, by the creator of the Polyvagal Theory, Dr. Stephen Porges, says it best:

“In Body Wisdom and the Polyvagal Theory, Autum Romano and her son, Foster, bring the essence of Polyvagal Theory to young children in an intuitive and engaging graphic presentation. Polyvagal Theory is about feelings and how we, as responsible parents, teachers, and clinicians, need to be accessible to our children, to witness their feelings, and to reassure them that they are safe by being with us. This little book illustrates that the capacity to acknowledge our bodily feelings and to respect our need to connect are the critical resources that enable us to shift from negative feelings to feelings of safety, trust, and love. Or, in Autum’s words, ‘our ticket back to feeling safe, happy, and curious is always inside a hug, a smile, or the hand of a loved one.’”

Presenter Autum Romano is an educator, author, and bodyworker who’s passionate about nervous system regulation as a foundation for transformative whole health. Autum and her family are neurodivergent and twice-exceptional. She is passionate about advocacy and supporting the Neurodiversity Movement and homeschool families.
