S1, E6: Kristina Collins: Shaping the Future Through Leadership, Volunteerism, and Collaboration

Kristina Henry Collins, Ph.D.

Join us as we talk with Dr. Kristina Collins, President of SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted) about her many roles in the world of gifted education and support.   We’ll hear the latest news from SENG, with a look to the future. We’ll talk about the common threads Dr. Collins sees in her work with various organizations, and how she brings these organizations together in a common cause of supporting gifted people throughout the lifespan.  We’ll also discuss her work as a passionate advocate for culturally and racially diverse learners, and ask her for some timely advice on being actively, rather than passively, anti-racist. We’re excited to find out what is going on in the world of gifted education and social/emotional support from the perspective of someone who is helping to shape a brighter future for gifted learners.

Dr. Kristina Henry Collins

Dr. Kristina Henry Collins is a graduate of the The University of Georgia, where she earned a Ph.D. in educational psychology.  She also holds an Ed.S. in educational psychology from the The University of Georgia, a M.S.Ed. in mathematics from Jacksonville State University, a B.S. in engineering from the University of Alabama, and a Military Science diploma in cryptology from the United States Navy.  Dr. Collins has many years of experience with STEM teaching and leading in Title I middle schools and high schools.  Her professional certifications include technology education, AP computer science, and educational leadership/administration.  At Texas State University, she teaches courses related to talent development and gifted education.  She was selected as a finalist as 2021 “Person to Watch” in Gifted Education, by the 2e News and Bridges Academy.

  • Ten ways you can use psychologically minded language with your gifted/2e student (at home or at homeschool) January 18, 2021
Working with your child as a both a teacher and a parent can be challenging. Teachers go to years of school to learn how to reach and mold talented young minds. Mental health professionals have years of practice in trying to unpack the tangle of human motivation. You have a career and a life (and […]

  • GHF Celebrates MLK Day January 18, 2021
For those of us who grew up during the life of Martin Luther King, Jr, we became rooted in what it meant to be an American by understanding King’s approach to applying the principles of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and our lore. “I say to you today, my friends, so even though […]

  • THE LABELING EXPERIENCE (THEY TELL ME I’M GIFTED…) January 17, 2021
SYNOPSIS  In this article, I discuss application of the gifted label and what ensues—the revelation, the complexities, the emotional juggling that many children feel—as well as some supportive measures that parents can put in place so that children’s “lived experiences” are fulfilling. THE GIFTED LABEL At first blush, one might think that the gifted label […]

  • Creating Community: Does Anyone Ever Truly Belong? September 9, 2020
Belonging arises from the decision to show up and allow yourself to be seen. If you’re holding back, thinking you’re not good enough or trying to avoid ridicule, it won’t matter what anyone else does. You won’t feel like you belong because you’re not actually present. We all want community. Our culture revolves around being […]

  • Hey, Jude September 9, 2020
Jude attended college with his revised 504 Plan accommodations and executive functions coaching access. We worked together to have these set in place, through his college disability department. He drives. He manages his own bank account. He has a rich social life. My brother is twenty-seven years younger than me. Jude was born four months […]

  • Community. Life or Death? It Was for Us. September 2, 2020
That fall,  when Grace started the gifted school-within-a-school program, was not spent focusing or doing what she was supposed to. Her teacher was emailing, albeit carefully, letting me know that she was hoping Grace could focus a bit and give her best effort. These emails made my husband and I smile. She was getting in […]
