S1, E5: Online Gifted Education with Jaime Smith

October 24, 2020 By ghfmain

September 17, 2020 3:30ET

“Jaime Smith has been teaching English to children and adults since 1997, when she began teaching 5th and 6th grade Language Arts at The Harker School in San Jose after earning a B.A. in Linguistics from U.C. Berkeley. Since then, Jaime has earned an M.A. TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and an M.S. Education with an emphasis in online teaching and learning. She has taught for institutions such as San Jose State University, Cal State East Bay, Englishtown.com, and the Art Institute Online, and has trained teachers both locally and internationally.

While attending a recent conference for California English teachers, Jaime gave a presentation on the use of social networking and web 2.0 technology in education, and she is thrilled to be able to apply those ideas and more to G3 courses. A lifelong learner, Jaime is now studying to earn a college counseling certificate at U.C. San Diego that will help her guide G3 students to their next educational adventure. Jaime is proud to be listed on the 2014 SENG Honor Roll of Outstanding Educators.

At OnlineG3.com, Jaime is known to her students as Headmistress Guinevere. She teaches language and literature classes at G3. She is also the President and CEO of Online G3, Inc.”

  • #4 Ten ways: Use the forced choice paradigm February 23, 2021
Use the forced choice paradigm – When kids are upset, they can do lots of things: melt down, lash out, shut down, etc.  All these states represent altered neuropsychological functioning, usually marked by an excess of emotion that the body is unable to process.  If the body is overloaded on emotion, the “lizard brain” (the […]

  • #3 Ten ways: Don’t ask questions if they aren’t questions February 16, 2021
Don’t ask questions if they aren’t questions – I have a good friend who is a lawyer (who shall remain nameless for the purposes of this article) who often admonishes me for asking questions when I don’t have to.  It is a common social artifice, but it rarely serves any purpose other than maintaining niceties. […]

  • #2 Ten ways: “Let’s” not “You” February 9, 2021
“Let’s” not “You” – We’re in this together!  When I work with a client in therapy, I usually ask some variation of “What do we want to work on today?”  I know that I’m not the client (really, I do).  But this inclusive technique is a subtle way of modeling connection and setting boundaries.  Gifted […]

  • Leading with Love and Kindness February 5, 2021
I often speak about the approach of Leading with Love and Kindness within the contexts of being the President of a non-profit and as a teacher. I know that it can sound a little much. People may ask, is this guy in some weird cult?  So, I want to explain what I mean. Let’s start with explaining that […]

  • #1 Ten ways: “And” not “But” January 30, 2021
“And” not “But” – As human beings, we tend to connect things and create narratives. Sometimes this is really helpful for us (“I know that I’m not very good at chess right now, but I just started playing!” or “I didn’t like the last season of Doctor Who, but I loved the previous two seasons!”) […]

  • Ten ways you can use psychologically minded language with your gifted/2e student (at home or at homeschool) January 18, 2021
Working with your child as a both a teacher and a parent can be challenging. Teachers go to years of school to learn how to reach and mold talented young minds. Mental health professionals have years of practice in trying to unpack the tangle of human motivation. You have a career and a life (and […]
