Homeschool Life 101: Self-care as Core Curriculum
Self-care has become a punchline in this Age of COVID; something to justify over-indulging in peanut butter chocolate ice cream (WHO HAS THE ICE CREAM, YOU’D BETTER SHARE!). Ahem. In reality, it’s the ability to be the loving adult you need yourself to be for yourself (still following?) is a life skill everyone needs. It could even be a core component of your homeschool. Join Jen (that’s me) as she guides you through making self-care an important part of your life and something that you model for your kids as you develop its practice.
Explore the ideas around positive niche construction (a strength-based approach to education) as they relate to homeschooling. How do homeschoolers alter our environments, use mentors, role models and strength-based learning to support our gifted families? We do it naturally and organically, and maybe without even knowing we are doing it. Let’s draw some awareness to how we purposefully create a homeschool vibe that works for you! I’ll share some thoughts and concepts and hope you’ll share what is working for you so together we can stay inspired as we move into the New Year.

Jen Merrill is a writer, musician, and gifted family advocate. The mom of two boys, she homeschooled one twice-exceptional son through high school while happily sending the other out the door every morning. Her book, If This is a Gift, Can I Send It Back?, struck a nerve with families; her second book on the needs of gifted parents is in progress, and she is featured in GHF Press’ new release, Perspectives on Giftedness. Jen is the editor of GHF Journey, and, in addition to writing on her long-time blog, Laughing at Chaos, she has presented at SENG, NAGC, and WCGTC. Jen brings both her acquired wisdom and her experience as a teacher and mentor to her work in the service of parents, teaching them techniques and mentoring them into their own versions of success. Her goal is to support parents of gifted and twice-exceptional kids, because they are the ones doing the heavy lifting and are too often ignored, patronized, and discredited. It is her hope that her sons never have to deal with these issues when they raise their own likely gifted children.

Kasi Peters is a long-time supporter of gifted families and is an advocate for child-led, autonomous education. This passion led her to co-found Westside of Los Angeles Gifted – a community of gifted families who gather in person and online to share resources and create supportive and fun opportunities for families. She has two gifted children and has been homeschooling for 10 years. Kasi leads parent support groups and consults for families looking for alternatives to traditional brick-and-mortar schools through her business Square Pegs. She has a certificate in Gifted and Talented Education and has served on the board of directors for several gifted non-profit organizations, including Profoundly Gifted Retreat and GHF. Kasi is co-creator of DIY Education for GHF members, a comprehensive program supporting families ranging from homeschool-curious to newbie to veteran homeschoolers. She also serves on the advisory panel for Gro-Gifted and is a graduate student at Bridges Graduate School of Cognitive Diversity. In addition to her volunteer service to gifted organizations, Kasi is a board-certified pediatric music therapist.
