Lindsey Nelson, Education Chair
Lindsey Nelson holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering, an MS in Engineering Education, and is the Education Chair for GHF. Lindsey loves engaging gifted and twice-exceptional learners with big, juicy questions and believes that the best classes are fueled by students’ curiosity. Lindsey’s classes rely heavily on discussion and frequently incorporate video resources to allow learners to see engineering design in action. Lindsey uses open-ended homework challenges (such as “Design your own ultimate writing tool”) to offer students an opportunity to 1) use engineering design processes, 2) think outside of the box, and 3) pursue creative solutions.
Uncover the hidden histories of some of your favorite inventions that you use every day!
Inventors and engineers have created the world around us. By looking deep at an invention’s history, we can see engineers at work and discover our own inventive powers. We’ll be rolling up our sleeves to get our hands-on real inventions.
Invention by Design is recommended for learners ages 7 to 12. In Invention by Design, we explore one invention every class. We focus on understanding how engineers have worked on the invention over time and what drove major design changes. Learners will discover how to research the history of major inventions, recognize the contributions of engineers, and test their own ideas about how to improve an existing invention. After each class, learners will have the opportunity to create their own prototypes.
Invention by Design incorporates 8 small projects rather than 1 major final project. Students will have options that include prompts like create a three-dimensional model of your invention idea, draw a detailed sketch that demonstrates how an invention could be manufactured, use basic craft supplies like cardboard and hot glue to help other people get their hands on your idea, find a modern patent related to a common invention, and more.
Sample Course Outline
Each class meeting focuses on 1 invention where learners can propose the inventions they want to explore. We are likely to explore inventions like the stapler, the clothespin, athletic shoes, the light bulb, the parachute, television, the telescope, and eyeglasses.
Invention by Design is offered Summer 2019 and Fall 2019.
