Can Renzulli’s Schoolwide Enrichment Model be useful in a school-of-one? Learn strategies for creating a positive learning environment, rich with discovery experiences, to build engagement.
As a mom gifted with the unexpected opportunity to homeschool, I challenged myself to create the best school experience that my son never had. As the pandemic led the world to shut down around us, we focused on building a deep understanding of his specific needs, strengths, and interests and ultimately uncovered new levels of engagement in his work. To accomplish this, I applied several of the world’s greatest theories for gifted education to our learning environment to produce our “school-for-one.” We’ll begin by building a common language around giftedness via Renzulli’s most applicable theoretical models. We will then dive into the importance of Dr. Susan Baum’s strategies for creating a positive learning environment for twice-exceptional students. With a common language, and a positive environment established, we will move on to explore strategies for bringing Renzulli’s experiences to life within your homeschool. I will provide tangible ideas for how you might approach each experience type, given multiple constraints such as: school size, geographic location, budget, and learner challenges. Plan to leave this session inspired to create your own enrichment experiences, along with a list of strategies for leveraging your learner’s strengths, interests, and talents to build engagement.
