Day 2 Session 2: Building Solid Parenting Foundations – 3 Key Interdisciplinary Insights from Neuroscience, Psychology, and Developmental Science

April 4, 2022 By ghfmain

Lin Lim, Ph.D.

Parenting and human development does not come with a guidebook or formal training. Start by understanding 3 key translational research insights  from neuroscience, psychology and developmental Science.

Parents play an important role in nurturing and guiding our children. Why doesn’t parenting and human development come with a guidebook and formal training? Begin by understanding and clarifying myths in 3 key translational research insights  from neuroscience, psychology, and developmental Science: 1) Brain and reasoning, 2) Anchoring and Priming, 3) Attention.

Lin Lim, Ph.D. is an Associate Dean at Bridges Graduate School of Cognitive Diversity in Education (BGS). She holds a doctorate in psychology from Boston University, Academic Graduate Certificate in Mind, Brain, and Teaching (Johns Hopkins University), and Twice-exceptional Education (BGS). Her journey with her two profoundly gifted children, one is twice-exceptional, drives her to create better understanding and collaboration between all educational stakeholders.

Day 2 Evening Event: Knowledge is Power – Understanding and Empowering Your 2e Child

April 4, 2022 By ghfmain

Dr. Susan Baum

We’ll examine what it really means to have twice exceptional child, and endeavor to understand our role as parents to support growth academically, socially, and emotionally.

Who are the children we call twice exceptional? How does the dual diagnosis impact their identities and result in profound complexities? For too long, bright students with academic, behavioral, or social challenges are subjected to remediation and other strategies designed to “fix” them. However, studies have shown that attention should be on developing what these 2e students can do by using a strength-based, talent focused approach. In short, we need to create and advocate for 2e friendly environments at home and school where these students feel safe to learn. In such an environment, students find the courage to overcome their challenges and engage in learning with confidence and enthusiasm. Sounds great – but how? Let’s delve into what I call the Suite of Tools process!

Susan Baum, Ph.D. is the Director of the 2e Center for Research and Professional Development at Bridges Academy and Provost of the Bridges Graduate School for Cognitive Diversity in Education. Author of many publications, her research and experience in the field of 2e education have earned her much recognition worldwide.
