Day 1 Session 1: Enrichment Triad Model – Application for a School-of-One

April 4, 2022 By ghfmain

Amy Clark

Can Renzulli’s Schoolwide Enrichment Model be useful in a school-of-one? Learn strategies for creating a positive learning environment, rich with discovery experiences, to build engagement.

As a mom gifted with the unexpected opportunity to homeschool, I challenged myself to create the best school experience that my son never had. As the pandemic led the world to shut down around us, we focused on building a deep understanding of his specific needs, strengths, and interests and ultimately uncovered new levels of engagement in his work. To accomplish this, I applied several of the world’s greatest theories for gifted education to our learning environment to produce our “school-for-one.” We’ll begin by building a common language around giftedness via Renzulli’s most applicable theoretical models. We will then dive into the importance of Dr. Susan Baum’s strategies for creating a positive learning environment for twice-exceptional students. With a common language, and a positive environment established, we will move on to explore strategies for bringing Renzulli’s experiences to life within your homeschool. I will provide tangible ideas for how you might approach each experience type, given multiple constraints such as: school size, geographic location, budget, and learner challenges. Plan to leave this session inspired to create your own enrichment experiences, along with a list of strategies for leveraging your learner’s strengths, interests, and talents to build engagement.

Amy Clark is doctoral student at Bridges Graduate School, a solutions innovator and a mom. She found her love of twice-exceptional education through the creation of Chestnut Ridge Academy, which she founded to serve her son by creating highly customized experiences for gifted and exceptional minds. In addition to her daily role as a tiny-school leader, she supports families on their own unique journeys. She guides parents to better understand their exceptional children and to uncover strategies for both educating and parenting differently through her company, Exceptionally Engaged. Her decades-long career in research and design at some of the world’s most creative companies has helped millions of people to feel empowered with tools that become part of their everyday lives. She continues to impact lives as an education, neurodiversity, and design consultant for those looking to discover the magic that lies at the intersection of technology and learning.

Day 1 Breakout Session: The Gifted/2e Journey – The Parent’s Perspective

April 4, 2022 By ghfmain

Dr. Karen B. Arnstein

Parents experience multiple stages of grieving when their child is identified as gifted or twice-exceptional, questioning future friendships, relationships, and the right educational fit. We will explore recent findings and real examples to help us navigate the commonalities and uniqueness among our individual parenting paths.

Join a theoretical researcher, educator, and parent of a 2e child, on her journey through private, public, and charter school experiences. Dr. Arnstein discovered the emergent theme of the parental experience of grieving during her doctoral research examining the developmental transitions of preadolescent twice-exceptional students. This presentation explores how parents perceive growth in academic and psychosocial domains. Leveraging our common knowledge of grieving, this presentation also explores the perspectives provided by the study participants who defined the four stages of parental grieving as 1) grieving, 2) changing perception of role, 3) lessons learned, and 4) current perspectives.

Dr. Karen Arnstein is an assistant professor in Educational Psychology at the University of Houston-Downtown. She examines the developmental transitions of twice-exceptional students. Karen is a speaker and author dedicated to identifying and serving gifted and twice-exceptional learners. She continues to serve as a board member for SENG and is also a columnist with GHF Dialogue.

Day 1 GHF Press Event: Discussion with Laura M. Jackson, Author of Discovering Dyscalculia

April 4, 2022 By ghfmain

Laura M. Jackson

Dyscalculia impacts 1 in every 20 children and adults, yet it is not widely recognized or understood. Laura will unpack what she has learned and encountered along her quest to support her  daughter’s experience, as told in her acclaimed debut, Discovering Dyscalculia.

Dyscalculia impacts about 1 in every 20 children and adults, yet it is not widely recognized or understood. This math learning disability not only affects individuals in educational settings but also impacts their everyday life when it comes to handling money, telling time, measuring quantities, and performing basic calculations. In this thoughtful and personal narrative, Laura M. Jackson writes about her child’s struggle with numbers, their shared discovery of dyscalculia, and the parental perspective that she and her husband experienced, supporting their daughter in school and in life.

REVIEWS FOR DISCOVERING DYSCALCULIA:

“This is the only book on dyscalculia written from a parent’s point of view. It lucidly presents the problems and the solutions surrounding assessment and the law and, most importantly, offers guidance on helping the dyscalculic learner. Every worried parent should read it.”

— Brian Butterworth, Emeritus Professor, University College London

“By far the best book for dyscalculia advocacy. Laura’s heartfelt storytelling combined with her sound advice make this book an invaluable aid to those on their own journeys with dyscalculia. I couldn’t put it down and will be highly recommending it to parents.”

— Catherine Eadle, The Dyscalculia Network

“Discovering Dyscalculia is perfectly on point. It will leave you feeling well-informed, inspired, and full of hope.”

— Amy Noall, LEP, NCSP, The Scholars’ Grove

“Reading Laura’s book is like inviting an expert translator to join you as you journey with your dyscalculic child. She offers engaging insights and accessible tools, all while reminding those of us impacted by dyscalculia that we are not alone!”

— Courtney Grager, parent

Presenter Laura M. Jackson is a mom, new author, dyscalculia advocate, and founder of discoveringdyscalculia.com. When she isn’t writing about dyscalculia or supporting parents online, she can be found spending time with her husband and two daughters. Her favorite things include: the great outdoors, gatherings with friends, good coffee, and dahlias.
