A conversation with Paula Prober, author of Your Rainforest Mind

(Member Content)

We talk a lot about how to support our gifted children here at GHF. This month we are practicing self-care and talking about our needs as gifted adults!  We’re talking with Paula Prober, author of Your Rainforest Mind and Journey Into Your Rainforest Mind, about exploring our own ever-evolving identities, our intensities, and our multipotentialities.  Paula will remind us that self-discovery is an ongoing journey, and to ”Accept who you are in all of your curious, passionate, deep-diving intensities.” Can’t wait!  See you there.

Paula Prober is a psychotherapist, consultant, blogger, and author in private practice in Eugene, Oregon, USA. Over the 35+ years she has worked with the gifted, Paula has been a teacher and presenter at universities, webinars, and conferences. She consults internationally with gifted adults and parents of gifted children. Her first book, Your Rainforest Mind: A Guide to the Well-Being of Gifted Adults and Youth, is an in-depth look at giftedness including case studies, strategies for greater self-understanding and growth, and numerous resources. Her new book, Journey Into Your Rainforest Mind: A Guide For Gifted Adults And Teens, Book Lovers, Overthinkers, Geeks, Sensitives, Brainiacs, Intuitives, Procrastinators, and Perfectionists is a compilation of her most popular blog posts and includes specific strategies to guide readers back to authenticity, purpose, love, and to finally deciding what color to paint the living room. She blogs at rainforestmind.com.

S1, E6: Kristina Collins: Shaping the Future Through Leadership, Volunteerism, and Collaboration

Kristina Henry Collins, Ph.D.

Join us as we talk with Dr. Kristina Collins, President of SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted) about her many roles in the world of gifted education and support.   We’ll hear the latest news from SENG, with a look to the future. We’ll talk about the common threads Dr. Collins sees in her work with various organizations, and how she brings these organizations together in a common cause of supporting gifted people throughout the lifespan.  We’ll also discuss her work as a passionate advocate for culturally and racially diverse learners, and ask her for some timely advice on being actively, rather than passively, anti-racist. We’re excited to find out what is going on in the world of gifted education and social/emotional support from the perspective of someone who is helping to shape a brighter future for gifted learners.

Helping 2e Learners Thrive

Dr. Michael Postma

Dr. Postma is a teacher, administrator, consultant, speaker, and author dedicated to the holistic development of both gifted and twice-exceptional children through his new company, Gifted & Thriving, LLC. Dr. Postma has published a number of articles and two books, the latest titled The Inconvenient Student: Critical Issues in the Identification and Education of Twice Exceptional Students. He travels and speaks nationally and internationally on a variety of topics such as: the social/emotional development of the gifted, understanding twice-exceptional learners, gifted/talented programming, neuroscience and the gifted/2e brain, and school-related topics from understanding assessment to quality instruction for gifted/2e learners. GHF welcomes him in his new role as Professional Membership Chair on the GHF Board.

Dr. Postma works with 2e individuals and families to help them learn how to thrive in a world that focuses on deficits, rather than celebrating strengths.  We’ll talk about understanding learning differences from a neuroscience perspective, and how to apply that knowledge to developing individualized strategies for work, school, and life in general.

Giftedness and Dabrowski’s Theory of Positive Disintegration

Christiane Wells, Ph.D., is the director of qualitative research for the Institute for the Study of Advanced Development and a therapist in private practice in Colorado. Chris specializes in Dabrowski’s theory of positive disintegration and its application to the gifted in research and practice.

If you’re interested in learning more about what Dabrowski meant by positive disintegration and overexcitability, and how it relates to giftedness, please join us. Dabrowski’s constructs have been more helpful to me than any diagnosis that I have lived with from the DSM. Instead of describing myself as an expert, I would say that I have lived through positive disintegration many times, which led me to study it with great enthusiasm. The theory of positive disintegration has provided me a framework for understanding the intense experience that has always characterized my life.
