Julie Skolnick, MA, JD presents Gifted and Distractible: Parenting and Teaching Twice Exceptional Learners
The objective of this presentation is to empower parents, educators and professionals to bring out the best and raise self-confidence in twice exceptional kids through an understanding of the 2e person’s inner experience, through strategies that are immediately applicable for parents and educators, and through advocacy steps necessary to encourage the adults in 2e kids’ lives to collaborate on the 2e child’s behalf. Using the “Cycle for Success” which includes understanding, strategies, and advocacy, participants will gain an understanding of the 2e child’s perspective and experience, will learn to anticipate common challenges, and address them with best practice strategies. Throughout the session a strengths-based approach and positive reframing will be utilized, and role modeled. We will discuss how gifted brains differ from neuro-typical brains and will introduce the idea of responsive parenting and teaching rather than reactive parenting and teaching.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Deep understanding of the 2e child’s inner experience. -Strategies incorporating the child’s buy-in. -Collaborative and meaningful advocacy steps.
